Our Association

The Austrian Breed Federation for Ponies, Small Horses and Special Breeds (OEZP, in former times Federation of the Pony and Small Horse Breeders in Austria) is active and in all 9 counties of the Federal Republic in accordance with the valid animal breeding laws as breed organization for ponies, small horses and special horse breeds recognition since more than 35 years in complete Austria. We care for at present 21 defined breeds and their breeding in Austria, whereby we obey thereby the guidelines of the Austrian animal breeding laws as well as those of the European Union, in particular the regulations of the respective countries of origin of the breeds cared for by us. With the responsible persons national and international breed organizations we maintain continuous contacts.

In fulfilment of these tasks and obligations we inform you in all questions of horse breeding and issue proofs, horse passports and other legally prescribed documents relevant for the breed. With the central stallions inspection in the spring the presented stallions are examined, measured veterinary and judged by a commission. On a long-term basis also sporty successes of the animals cared for by us flow as achievements into the evaluation of the breed fitness also. Mares and foals are inspected at own or common shows of the individual race sections, in addition, with yard attendance and/or other horse meetings. Particularly the information and training of the breeders are important for us: at least one training for beginners and advanced breed wardens each are held annually. Further we organize informal breeder meetings, informative Pony and/or special horse looking and help with the respectable horse in and sales.

To co-operation with the responsible persons committees in the BFV for riding and driving into Austria as well as abroad neighbouring we promote also the national and international riding and driving sport with Ponies, in particular for children and young people. The example of prominent riding nations shows that most began the later successful international rider their career already as children - on ponies! This, because easy handling a pony makes the ideal introduction for suitable size possible into the riding.

By the example of prominent riding nations such as England, Holland or Germany it shows that most began the later successful international rider already as children their career. They did not only ride first on Ponies, by them expert handling the animal, riding technology and that feeling of security became natural, which lead in the long run to sovereigns controlling the horse and to the minimization of the dangers connected with the practice of the sport.

It is beyond doubt that no better entrance can be ordered to the child or young person into the riding, as by early handling a pony of suitable size. The variety of the pony breeds and the broad pallet of types and sizes make it easy to find for each purpose and each child an individually suitable small horse. Generally one can say that small horses (those are Ponies and small horses up to a stick measure of 148 cm) are durable, step-safe, persistent, less illness susceptible, less fastidious in the reference to feeding, and have a clearly higher life expectancy than large horses. They are suitable for each range of the leisure or tournament riding, like dressage, jumping, eventing, driving or western riding, but beyond that also for mounted games and leadrein classes for the smallest ones.

With pony tournaments the children can measure also without rider license among themselves, without with the tournament ambition and professionalism of the adult world to be confronted. On the other hand however with European championships for ponies by young people absolute high-performance sport is ordered, which creates the ideal conditions for a further career in the international riding.
